چکیده

It is well known that energy spectra of particles from atmospheric family events which are observed by the emulsion chambers at mountain altitudes are essentially following power-like dependence. On the other hand the occurence of power-law distributions is a very common feature in nature and it is usually connected with such notions as criticality, fractals and chaotic dynamics and studied using generalized (nonextensive) maximum entropy formalism characterized by a nonextensivity parameter q. Such formalism leads in a natural way to power-laws in the frame of equilibrium processes [1]. For nonequilibrium phenomena the sources of power-law distributions are self-organized criticality [2] and stochastic multiplicative processes [3]. In the former nonequilibrium systems are continuously driven by their own internal dynamic to a critical state with power-laws omnipresent. In the later power-law is generated by the presence of underlying replication of events. All these approaches can be unified in terms of generalized nonextensive statistics mentioned above (widely known as Tsallis statistics) [1].

Self-organized criticality: A signature of quantumlike chaos in atmospheric flows

Atmospheric flows exhibit long-range spatiotemporal correlations manifested as the fractal geometry to the global cloud cover pattern concomitant with inverse power law form for power spectra of temporal fluctuations on all spacetime scales ranging from turbulence (centimetres-seconds) to climate (kilometres-years). Long-range spatiotemporal correlations are ubiquitous to dynamical systems in n...

Word processors with line wrap: Cascading, self-organized criticality, random walks, diffusion, and predictability.

We examine the line-wrap feature of text processors. We show that adding characters to previously formatted lines leads to the cascading of words to subsequent lines. The length of these cascades shows a power-law distribution. We show that this system is in a state of self-organized criticality. The connection to onedimensional random walks and diffusion problems is demonstrated. Of particular...

Self-organized criticality: Does it have anything to do with criticality and is it useful?

Three aspects of complexity are fractals, chaos, and self-organized criticality. There are many examples of the applicability of fractals in solid-earth geophysics, such as earthquakes and landforms. Chaos is widely accepted as being applicable to a variety of geophysical phenomena, for instance, tectonics and mantle convection. Several simple cellular-automata models have been said to exhibit ...

Nonlinear Dynamics and Chaos: Applications in Atmospheric Sciences

Atmospheric flows, an example of turbulent fluid flows, exhibit fractal fluctuations of all space-time scales ranging from turbulence scale of mm sec to climate scales of thousands of kilometers – years and may be visualized as a nested continuum of weather cycles or periodicities, the smaller cycles existing as intrinsic fine structure of the larger cycles. The power spectra of fractal fluctua...

Controlling self-organizing dynamics on networks using models that self-organize.

Controlling self-organizing systems is challenging because the system responds to the controller. Here, we develop a model that captures the essential self-organizing mechanisms of Bak-Tang-Wiesenfeld (BTW) sandpiles on networks, a self-organized critical (SOC) system. This model enables studying a simple control scheme that determines the frequency of cascades and that shapes systemic risk. We...
